Rough Opening

ArchCraft® relies on information provided regarding the rough opening size. From the rough opening size, the correct finished size for the archway will be determined. Please be precise as these measurements will determine the size of the archway.

    Rough Opening Width
Rough Opening Width refers to the size of the rough opening from left to right (see drawing below). ArchCraft’s® standard finished archway widths are listed in the table below. These archway widths are measured from inside jamb to inside jamb of the finished archway. ArchCraft® assumes the framers standard two inch adder for the rough opening width. This adder allows for two jambs that are each 3/4" thick (1-1/2” total) to fit within the rough opening with 1/2” of play. For example, our 36 ” finished archway will properly fit within a rough opening that measures 38”.

    Rough Opening Height
Rough opening height is the size of the rough opening as measured from the sub-floor to the bottom of the header (see drawing below). ArchCraft® assumes this measurement is taken prior to flooring installation. If this measurement is taken after final flooring installation please let us know.

Rough Opening Jamb Width (Wall Thickness)
Rough Opening Jamb Width refers to the wall thickness (including sheetrock). A typical jamb width is 4-1/2" which consists of a wall studded with 2x4's and covered with 1/2" sheetrock on both sides (a 2x4 is 3 1/2" wide), however, any wall thickness can be accommodated. Variations in wall thicknesses around the rough opening are to be expected and it is best if you indicate the thickest measurement to us to ensure proper fit. If your wall thickness variations exceed 1/4" please let us know and we will help determine a proper solution.
